Israeli teen program pivots for Summer 2021
This has been a very difficult year for us all and we wanted to update you on the Open Hearts Open Homes program that has been so instrumental in providing respite for Israeli teens. We are thrilled to let you know that we will be providing programming this summer and it is through your support that this is possible.
As you know, for nineteen years the JCC of Northern New Jersey welcomed Israeli teens to our community. Sadly, when Covid-19 hit in March of 2020 the teens who were scheduled to come that summer were put on hold and our ability to bring these teens to Bergen County remain constrained.
However, with the horrific events of May, where over 4300 rockets were fired into Israel forcing our teens into safe rooms and shelters for 14 days and the continuation of threats with incendiary balloons and other acts of terrorism, we remain committed to supporting our teens with an amazing and meaningful summer experience in Israel this August.
Our two-week program will include activities through Israel that they have not previously experienced. It will include home hospitality for Shabbat in Nahariya, our Federation’s sister city. The program will incorporate the opportunity for American host families to participate and interact with these teens. We are proud of the fact that we will still be able to provide a meaningful opportunity for the Israeli teens and the JCC of Northern New Jersey community. We will update you as we finalize the program details.
On Passover we say, “Next year in Jerusalem!” We are excited to say, “Next summer in Bergen County!”
Thank you to our OHOH chair people, Leslie & David Smith and Wendy Ward.
