A New Year Brings New Beginnings

To our JCC of Northern NJ community:

The JCC of Northern New Jersey and JCC Rockland are excited to announce a new relationship between the two organizations. The goal of this relationship will lead to both enhanced programming as well as new initiatives aimed at engaging young Jewish families in the Northern NJ area served by the JCC of Northern New Jersey.  Together we will work towards strengthening Jewish life in Northern New Jersey with the ultimate goal of rebuilding a vibrant JCC.

After many months of exploring our options, the two organizations have agreed that the JCC of Northern New Jersey will come under the professional leadership and guidance of JCC Rockland senior staff. David Kirschtel, CEO of JCC Rockland, and Eliza Millman, COO, will serve as the senior executives of the JCC of Northern New Jersey. Each of them has more than 20 years’ experience in the JCC world.

Kirschtel began his service in Rockland on that agency’s Board of Directors and has been the CEO since 2000. Millman has been a part of the JCC movement since her own camp days, and worked at other JCCs, including JCC MetroWest in West Orange, New Jersey. She has been COO of JCC Rockland for the past eight years.

The two agencies will continue as independent entities that operate under the guidance of their own separate Boards of Directors. The JCC of Northern New Jersey will hire an outreach director who will focus exclusively on developing programming and potential future leadership for the JCC in Northern New Jersey with a focus on serving and connecting young Jewish families in Northern Bergen County. Existing JCC of Northern New Jersey staff will remain focused on building and strengthening programming, including senior programming, arts and culture events, Open Hearts Open Homes, and PJ Library.

The JCC of Northern New Jersey is excited to have such a strong, professional, leadership team with a proven track record. Their primary goal is to grow programming, based on needs in the area, and to support and sustain Jewish life.

“We’re extremely excited about our new executives and what they can bring to the Jewish community of Northern New Jersey,” says Barry Kissler, Chairman of the Board of the JCC of Northern New Jersey. “We will be able to grow programming in the area.  It’s a natural fit to work with the leadership team of a local JCC and we’re really looking forward to building this relationship as a way of reaching and strengthening the Jewish community here.” “We are grateful to Jason Shames, CEO and Lisa Harris Glass, COO of Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey who supported us during these past two years with leadership and back office support that has positioned us to take this next step.”

“The leadership of both of our organizations built a strong working relationship over the past six months and this was the logical next step in strengthening our Jewish communities,” says Jeff Degen, president of the board of JCC Rockland. “We’re eager to be able to share our leadership team with the JCC of Northern New Jersey and look forward to helping them to rebuild a strong JCC.”

The JCC of Northern New Jersey has served the Jewish Community across Northern New Jersey for nearly one hundred years.  It plans to bring Jewish programming and services across multiple locations as it builds and strengthens the Jewish community.
