Join the JCCNNJ as we watch the story of “Bar Mitzvah Boy” unfold before us. This one-night only performance is not to be missed. In an intimate setting, up close and personal, audience members will experience this beautiful story played out by actors before them as a staged reading with scripts in hand. This type of raw theatrical experience allows a deep connection to be made between the actors, the story and audience members; the words will illuminate the room.

Rabbi Allan Finkel wrote, “I found myself sitting in outright awe of the experience, somehow the best play I have seen in years — truly a subtle and intelligent (actually exquisite) presentation of how two individuals deal with timeless and complex issues that we all deal with in some way or another – What part does faith and ritual play in me being a Jew? What roles will community and synagogue life play over the course of my life? Oy vey!” (Winnipeg Jewish Theatre)

In “Bar Mitzvah Boy”, we meet Joey – a poker-playing divorce attorney – who needs a Bar Mitzvah, and he needs it now (he’s free tonight). But Rabbi Michael Levitz-Sharon — a woman leading a small synagogue and facing her daughter’s cancer diagnosis — doesn’t play that way. Can their friendship and their faith survive tragedy?

Our evening together begins with a welcome reception at 6:30 PM. Our theatre program kicks off at 7 PM with a staged play reading, followed by audience Q&A with the playwright, Mark Leiren-Young, winner of the 2017 Writer’s Guild of Canada Award for Best Documentary and three-time finalist for Writers Guild of Canada Awards. “Bar Mitzvah Boy” was the 2017 Winner of the Jewish Playwriting Prize awarded by the Jewish Plays Project.

The Jewish Plays Project (NYC) puts bold, progressive Jewish conversations on world stages, and has featured some of the best artists working in New York, including writers David Hein and Irene Sankoff (Come from Away), Robert Askins (Hand to God), and director Marc Bruni (Beautiful). The Playwriting Contest – the JPP’s largest program – has vetted 1,334 plays by 994 writers in 32 states and 9 countries, and advanced 29 plays to production in New York, London, Tel Aviv and all over the U.S.

Advanced registration is highly recommended. Similar programs have SOLD OUT in the past. As a special touch to our JCCNNJ program, local award-winning actor/director Geoffrey Cantor will offer our audience a special greeting.
