Spoiler Alert! Let’s Talk About Israeli TV

Have you been binge-watching Shtisel, Fauda or Srugim? Were you as excited as we were for the launch of Unorthodox on March 26? Join us for a “book club-style” discussion of Israeli shows appearing on American television, guided by actor and director Geoffrey Cantor (Daredevil, The Punisher, Maniac).

Israeli TV is hot in the US these days and for good reason! According to this article in The Atlantic, “What explains Shtisel-mania? For starters, as many critics have noted, Shtisel, which has been streaming on Netflix since December, is marvelous TV. In two seasons, it won a slew of Ophirs, the Israeli Emmys, including for Best Drama and for Best Actor, Best Directing, and Best Script in a drama series.” The author goes on to add, “Shtisel’s combination of radical particularity and radical universality lies at the core of its appeal.”

When it comes to shows like Srugim, “‘For the unorthodox people, it opens a curtain for them to peek and look into the lives of people who are our neighbors, but who we don’t really know,’ says Karni Ziv, head of drama and comedy, at leading Israeli commercial TV network Keshet Broadcasting,” as noted in this DW.com article from the German media.

Just launched on Netflix, Unorthodox stars Shira Haas (Shtisel), who portrays Esther and her “uphill battle to obtain a divorce” that “mirrors..The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’s heroine Midge as she splits from her husband” (The Guardian).

Join us from the comfort of your sofa for this on-line discussion about Israeli TV guided by Geoffrey Cantor. Binge watch in anticipation to avoid too many spoiler alerts!
