Location: West Nyack, NY at Lewis JCC offices
Reports to: Program & Community Outreach Director
Salary range: $63,000-65,000

The community outreach professional acts as a vital bridge between the JCC of Northern NJ and the public. Develop programs, foster local partnerships, and raise awareness about our mission or services, especially focused on J on the Go, our young family outreach initiative and PJ Library, a free monthly subscription service for Jewish families. This role heavily involves networking, especially within the Jewish community, event planning, and engaging various leaders in the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Development: Design, implement, and manage community outreach goals and programs tailored to J on the Go and PJ Library’s mission.
  • Relationship Building: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, local businesses, and partner organizations. Be an active leader and face of our organization.
  • Event and Group Development: Plan, organize, and staff community events and outreach initiatives. Includes at least one evening and one Sunday every month. Oversee staff charged with monthly family events. Strategically plan and execute affinity group experiences (parents’ nights out, baby groups, specialty family groups).
  • Communications: Act as the face of the organization by presenting at public events, engaging in elevated conversations with leaders at all levels in the community, advising on social media and written material, and creating targeted enrollment campaigns.
  • Data & Reporting: Assess community needs, collect data on program impact, and report on outcomes for grant purposes.
  • Leadership & Volunteer Management: Recruit, train, and supervise Volunteers and Parent Connectors to assist with various outreach and leadership development goals. Oversee and manage cohort of young leaders, refining curriculum and executing on the Board’s goals for leadership development. Foster community and engagement among parent lay leaders.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in community organizing, non-profit outreach, or public relations.
  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to comfortably speak to large groups and diverse populations.
  • Adaptability: A high degree of cultural competency, empathy, and comfort traveling locally to meet members of the community.
  • Organization: Strong project and time management skills.

About "J on the Go"

A “J on the Go” Parent Connector cultivates and supports the growth of parent-inspired, neighborhood-based programming. By sparking connections and listening to the needs of local families, you will create low-barrier Jewish experiences that align with the JCC mission and the PJ Library engagement framework.

Why This Role?

This is a unique, flexible role designed for “community builders.” You will be mentored by J on the Go staff, receive specialized training from PJ Library, and join a national network of like-minded professionals to share ideas and best practices.

Primary Goals

  • Design & Execute: Create engaging, accessible gatherings such as play dates, coffee meetups, and parent-only evenings.
  • Expand the Circle: Proactively identify and welcome new families into the PJ Library community.
  • Build Relationships: Foster deep, meaningful connections between local families and the larger Jewish community.
  • Resource Connection: Act as a bridge, connecting parents to local Jewish resources and opportunities.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

The “People” Person
  • Relationship Builder: You are an excellent listener who is genuinely excited to meet and welcome parents raising Jewish children.
  • Culturally Aware: You are respectful of the diverse range of Jewish connections and family structures.
  • Passionate: You enjoy infusing Jewish themes into programs in creative, modern ways.
The “Community” Strategist
  • Digitally Savvy: Familiar with online channels like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp groups for parents.
  • Self-Motivated: You are a curious “self-starter” who can work independently while remaining a collaborative team player.
  • Organized: You have a strong attention to detail regarding administrative tracking and program planning.

Position Requirements

  • Flexibility: Ability to work a varied schedule, including at least one Sunday per month.
  • Mobility: Must provide your own transportation to various neighborhood events and meetups.
  • Professionalism: Ability to represent the JCC of Northern NJ with warmth and professionalism at all times.
  • Budget Management: Oversight of a $800 annual budget for materials and program supplies.

Building Community Connections in Northern New Jersey

I moved to Bergen County right before the pandemic and had my second child at the height of COVID. As we started opening up again I felt as though I needed to find a community to raise my children in. I started attending some of the J on the Go outdoor events and slowly began meeting people who became friends. After a few months, I saw a position open to be a Parent Coordinator. I jumped at the chance to take on this role to plan and organize playdates, activities and moms nights out. For the past 10 months I've created an amazing community in the Pascack Valley of like minded moms and their families who want to bring our children up with Jewish holiday celebrations and activities.

Before I participated in these meetups, I was concerned about my ability to find meaningful relationships within the Jewish community having recently moved from the city. Once I started to attend these meetups, I felt more connected to my Jewish identity and had a chance to meet many families with the same values. Now that I’ve connected to this community of families, I attend shabbat circle every week, have hosted playdates and holiday gatherings and felt overall more connected to the community as a whole.

Moving from the city to Hillsdale during COVID, I enrolled my daughter at the local temple nursery school. I found it difficult to make friends with the other moms as they all already seemed to know each other and were pretty cliquey. I met Jessica at a Tot Shabbat and instantly clicked with her. While I was nervous and shy to attend some of her events alone, she encouraged me to try out a moms night out. When I arrived she had not only saved me a seat but introduced me to several other moms who were friendly and open to meeting new people. Since that first event I've started coming to many events, both alone and with my family. So glad we found this amazing community.

Before I participated in these meetups, I was struggling to connect with other Jewish families and build community. When I started attending these meetups, I met Jewish families, made friends, and had a new element added to my social life. We also started regularly attending a tot Shabbat through the JCC and now my two year old asks every week when we are going to synagogue! These events have played a large role in connecting our family to local Jewish life and creating a nice sense of community for us.

Once I started to attend the different meet up options, I was able to meet new friends and be more involved in the Jewish community through the mini mensch group, attending tot shabbats and other family meet ups. I feel like the meet ups really opened me up to so many friendships and Jewish opportunities around the community.

Having my first child during the pandemic was extraordinarily isolating. Moving to a new town, with a new baby boy, during a global pandemic meant that I made very few mom friends and felt extremely isolated. So when I became pregnant with my daughter, I promised myself I would put myself out there and go to everything I could with her so that we could have a true “mommy and me” experience. Finding the Mini Mensch group was a true blessing!! I found a tribe of like minded moms raising Jewish babies, but also moms who understood what I was going through and who could commiserate and laugh together as our babies grew. I am so grateful for the mini mensch group - not only for my daughter but for myself!
